MELBOURNE, July 6 (Xinhua) -- A new jail will be opened in Australia's Victoria to combat the state's rising prison population, the state government said on Thursday.
Gayle Tierney, Victoria's Corrections Minister, promised that the new facility at Ravenhall, 30 kilometers west of Melbourne Cheap Nike Air Max 90 Womens , would be open by December 2017.
Tierney said that 1,000 prisoners would be moved to the state-of-the-art facility within 10 weeks of its opening.
"We know we have got capacity issues in the prison system," Tierney told Australian media.
"This facility will alleviate most of the problems that we are facing and we are looking forward to having prisoners in this facility before the end of the year," said Tierney.
The prison, which will accommodate exclusively males, has been fitted with an electric fence and laser monitoring system which will make escapes near-impossible.
More than 500 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will monitor the facility at all times with prison-wide lockdowns being easily allowed if a riot breaks out.
The prison will become functional as Victoria's jail population is predicted to soar to an all-time high of 7,590 inmates within the next 12 months.
Despite the construction of Ravenhall Cheap Nike Air Max 90 , a 2015 report by Victorian ombudsman Deborah Glass warned that Victoria's corrections system would reach capacity by 2019.
Tierney said the government had not ruled out building more prisons in Victoria as the state's population swells.
"We are looking at all options in terms of the growth of the prison population," she said.
"Yes, Ravenhall is coming on stream at the end of the year but we are doing a mile of work behind the scenes to work out what sort of modelling is going to provide the projections that we can base decisions on."
