RIO DE JANEIRO Eddie Murray Jersey , Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Tourism in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro has seen losses estimated at 657 million reais (around 200 million U.S. dollars) from January to August in 2017, due to the violence that has wracked the city, a study revealed on Tuesday.

The figure, presented by the National Confederation of Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), equates to the city's tourism revenue for between eight to nine days.

The bar and restaurant sectors were affected most by the violence, which lost around 332.1 million reais (101.5 million dollars), followed by transport, travel agencies and vehicle rental shops, with cumulative losses of 215.5 million reais (65.8 million dollars).

The hotel sector also suffered from a loss of 97.7 million reais (30 million dollars).

The CNC report said the tourism revenue drops 1.8 percent on average if the crime rate rises by 10 percent.

From January to September, Rio lost 10,237 jobs in the tourism sector, up from 6,823 jobs lost in 2015, the report said.

MADRID, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Spanish state prosecutor asked judge on Thursday afternoon to issue European arrest warrant for sacked Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, who was in Brussels currently.

The request for the arrest warrant also included former Catalan ministers Antoni Comin, Meritxell Serret, Lluis Puig and Clara Ponsati, who all remained in Belgium with Puigdemont after travelling from Barcelona last Friday.

The writ explains that Puigdemont has "publicly stated his intention of not appearing in court and has requested, as have Antonio Comin and Meritxell Serret, to address the court via video-conference, without offering any information about their location".

"In light of these events, the court is called upon to order a national and international search and arrest warrant," the Spanish Prosecutors office said in a statement.

Bail of 50,000 euros (58,368 U.S. dollars) was requested for former Catalan minister Santi Vila, who resigned from his office a day before the independence declaration was made.

Also on Thursday, eight former members of Puigdemont's deposed government, including his former deputy Oriol Junqueras, appeared in Spain's High Court in Madrid, to answer questions from judge High Court Carmen Lamela.

Puigdemont and four more former ministers opted to remain in Brussels insisting they would not get a fair hearing in what was a "political trial".

Puigdemont's lawyer Paul Bekeart told reporters that the climate in Spain was "not good. It is better to have some distance", but insisted that if asked, his client would "cooperate with Spanish and Belgian justice".

However, Spanish prosecutors are against Puigdemont being allowed to testify by video-conference.

"When someone doesn't appear after being cited by a judge to testify, in Spain or any other EU country, normally an arrest warrant is issued," said Carlos Lesmes, Spain's Supreme Court President.

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- China and Mexico established diplomatic ties in 1972, but their interactions date back as early as more than 450 years ago.

In Mexico City's Franz Mayer Museum, an ongoing exhibition explores the trade relations between the two countries from 1565 to 1815.

At the dawn of global trade, Spanish galleons sailed from Manila, the Philippines, to Mexico's Pacific coast port of Acapulco, carrying fabrics, lacquerware, porcelain, spices and other goods mainly made in China.

Brisk trade in goods offered numerous and sustained opportunities for the two cultures to meet and enrich each other, a historic development that is being celebrated now as part of the China-Latin America Year of Cultural Exchange.

Back then, Manila's port served as a departure point for Chinese embroidered silk, carved ivory and other valued products that were in high demand in the New World.

It was the China galleon that "gave rise to one of (history's) most enduring commercial ventures, a venture that generated wealth and work on both continents," Hector Rivero Borrell, director of Franz Mayer, told reporters at a preview on Tuesday.

Exhibit organizers, according to the Milenio daily, noted that Chinese artists would often be asked to create works in honor of Mexican religious or cultural icons, leading, for example, to images of the Virgin dressed "in oriental garb."

The exhibition features some 250 pieces, some from the Franz Mayer's own collection and others from museums in Spain, which ruled Mexico and most of the Americas in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It will be on show until the end of October.

This month, China and Mexico also celebrated their relations with musical performances, including a Beijing Opera performance and an evening of combined Mexican and Chinese performing arts titled "China and Mexico with Hands United."

"Amid the melodies and sweet, elegant songs, the audience could well sense the unique charm of the blending of the two cultures," Chinese Ambassador Qiu Xiaoqi wrote in La Jornada daily.

"The show was a faithful reflection of the vigorous cultural exchange between our two countries. China and Mexico are ancient civilizations and countries with very rich cultures. Both civilizations mutually highlight and learn from each other."

In this Olympic year, the ambassador also noted that Mexico and China have cooperated in other areas, such as sports, where Chinese diving coach Ma Jin has been instrumental in getting Mexico's diving talent into the elite ranks of Olympians. For that, she was awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest honor given a foreigner for services to the country.

More cultural events are in the offing, not just in Mexico, but in the rest of Latin America as well.
